You know something is ubiquitous when only its absence causes you to notice. Chain-link fencing would be one of those things. It seems there is money to be made in the fencing of fencing; otherwise it wouldn't be disappearing so rapidly. This isn't necessarily a bad development, certainly we could do without a lot of these barriers. Nevertheless, many of these fences do have their purposes and are paid for with our tax dollars. So, depending on where they are removed from, this can be either disheartening or pleasing.
A surprising and welcome turn of events in this regard is the renegade re-fencing of this de-fencing.
The answer to the over-asked Detroit questions "What will come next?" or "What will take the place of (fill in the blank)?" is often: "Stop worrying about it and just wait and see." Who could predict someone would have the gumption and imagination to fill the void between fence posts with intricately knotted colorful fabric? And yet that is what's happening along a freeway exchange near downtown which has been stripped of its chain-link.
The billowing blue and fluttering red fencing is a pleasant replacement for that monotonous chain-link. It gives you hope for the voids in this city. It makes the future look brighter and helps quell the worrying. Hopefully it will continue.

Stop the hate,
ReplyDeleteLet it be,
Just wait,
And you will see.
I like it. Renegade acts by concerned citizens to change the current state are what will improve the city, not the old guard complaining that Detroit is not like it was nor countless committees/meetings about what to do.
A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow.
HATR.
